Description
The elk (Cervus canadensis) is one of the largest species within the Cervidae or deer family in the world. They are also called "wapiti" - Shawnee for "white rump." A male elk is correctly called a stag and a female is called a hind. Most locals refer to them as bulls and cows.
The contiguous national parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho, as well as the Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks, studded with mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons and limestone caves, form a striking mountain landscape. All parks mentioned above were inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1984.
