Emerald Lake is one of the most admired destinations in Yoho National Park, with an unmatched diversity of both activities and landscapes suited to the enthusiastic traveler. It was discovered in 1882, when famed mountain guide Tom Wilson was led lakeside while rounding up a group of horses that had gone astray, and was immediately taken by the vivid emerald-colored waters.
Due to its high altitude, the lake is frozen from November until June. The vivid emerald color of the water, caused by powdered limestone, is most spectacular in July as the snow melts from the surrounding mountains.
The contiguous national parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho, as well as the Mount Robson, Mount Assiniboine and Hamber provincial parks, studded with mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls, canyons and limestone caves, form a striking mountain landscape. All parks mentioned above were inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 1984.
