Description
Brick Gothic church adjacent to the Main Market Square in Kraków, Poland. One of the most famous of Poland's churches, this Gothic structure features two striking towers, the taller of which is a magnificent Gothic spire with a gold-plated crown built in 1666.
It is an iconic church with a carved altarpiece & hourly trumpet calls from the Gothic watchtower.
It was built in 1221. 20 years later in 1241, the Mongols invaded Krakow and destroyed the church (Sack of Krakow). And the church once again was built in 1290 on the remaining foundation. From the taller tower every hour a trumpet sounds to commemorate the trumpeter who was shot in the throat by the invaders.
UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription in 1978 under "Historic Centre of Krakow - Ref: 29bis
