Description
The Evening Grosbeak, Coccothraustes vespertinus, is a large finch.
The breeding habitat is coniferous and mixed forest across Canada and the western mountainous areas of the United States and Mexico.
Often the highest numbers of breeding birds are found in areas experiencing outbreaks of spruce budworm. These birds are known as irruptive migrants meaning that their migration is irregular and often in response to food availability.
Evening Grosbeaks breed in Manitoba beginning around mid-May. Their nest is a shallow, loose cup of twigs lined with rootlets. The female usually lays 3 4 pale blue-green eggs, with brown specks mainly at the larger end of the egg. She incubates the eggs for 12-14 days, during which time the male supplies her with food. The altricial (naked and helpless) young are tended by both parents. They leave the nest after 13 14 days.
