Description
Mount Lorette Ponds, KCountry, Alberta, Canada
These ponds used to be a part of the Kananaskis River. Looping lazily off the rivers north/south alignment they formed what are known as oxbows, semi-circular or U-shaped bends in the river.
When Hwy 40 was upgraded these oxbows were cut off from the rest of the river. Loss of this important water source could have meant the eventual death of these ponds. However, a ground water discharge sorce replenishes them throughout the year.
